4.1. LanguagePractice.

  Numerals function as nouns and adjectives. In a sentence, a numeral can serve as a subject, attribute, object, predicative complement, or adverbial modifier.

  The words "digit, figure, numeral, number" may present some difficulty for language learners. For example, you can say "the digit 3; the figure 3; the numeral 3; the number 3", but the meanings of these word combinations are not the same.

  The word "digit" refers to any of Arabic figures from 0 to 9. Examples: the digit 4; the digit 7; a three-digit number; a group of three digits; use digits to write these numbers.

A decimal mark is a symbol used to separate the integer part from the fractional part of a number written in decimal form.

Differentcountriesofficiallydesignatedifferentsymbolsforthedecimalmark. The choice of symbol for the decimal mark also affects the choice of symbol for the thousands separator used in digit grouping, so the latter is also treated in this article.

In mathematics the decimal mark is a type of radix point, a term that also applies to number systems with bases other than ten.

Equivalent ratios are just like equivalent fractions. We multiply both the first and second numbers of a ratio by the same number to find an equivalent ratio.

Teacher: How do you understand the terms : cross products, a proportion, the numerator,the decimal mark?

Teacher:Can you find a fraction which is all 1's: 0.[1]=0.111111...?

Can you find a fraction which is all 2's: 0.[2]=0.222222...?

Without using the calculator, what fraction is 0.[3]=0.3333...?

... andwhat is 0.[4]=0.44444...?

Can you find a fraction which repeats you rage (e.g. 0.[14]=0.14 14 14 14 14... )?

What fraction will it be on your next birthday?

Can you find a fraction which is your birthday? e.g. for 5 January 1985 you might try 0.05 01 1985 or 01 05 1985 if you prefer the American system of writing dates

Can you... find a fraction which is 0.123456789?

By stopping any long fraction after a few decimal places, we can find a fraction that approximates the original one.
For instance π is 3.1415926535....

What is 3.1 as a fraction?

What is 3.14 as a fraction?

What about 3.141 and 3.142 if we round to 3 dps?

In fact, 22/7 = 3.1428.. is better than all those above so using just the first few decimal places to make a fraction is not always the best way to get a good fraction as an approximation.
